The Norwegian Petroleum Museum in Stavanger is a modern, interactive museum where you can experience how oil and gas were created millions of years ago, how petroleum is found and produced and what these resources are used for. Through the presentation of original objects, models, film and interactive exhibitions, the history of the oil industry on the Norwegian continental shelf is communicated. The museum also provides insight into technological developments within the oil and gas industry and how this industry has affected Norwegian society.

The Norwegian petroleum story began in the mid-1960s when the negotiations regarding the dividing line in the North Sea were settled. In 1965, the oil office in the Ministry of Industry was established and the first round of licenses was announced. The museum shows the historical development from the first platforms that drilled in the North Sea, via steel and concrete platforms developed and built in Norway - to modern, flexible production ships and underwater systems that appear to be the solution of the future on the Norwegian continental shelf.
